Relationship Between Repeated Sprint Ability, Aerobic Capacity, Intermittent Endurance, and Heart Rate Recovery in Youth Soccer Players. – PubMed – NCBI

Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research from

To investigate the relationship between repeated sprint ability (RSA) and several aerobic and anaerobic-related soccer-performance indicators, 45 youth soccer players (age 16.8 ± 0.1 years) were classified into “high” (HAF) or “low” aerobic fitness (LAF) (VO2max ≥ or <60 ml·kg·min, respectively) and completed an RSA test measuring best (RSAbest), mean (RSAmean), total sprint time (RSAtotal), and percent sprint decrement (Sdec). A laboratory VO2max test (LabTest) together with anaerobic threshold (VT) and peak speed was measured (vLabTest). In addition, a 20-m multistage shuttle run test (MSRT) and a soccer-specific test (TIVRE-Soccer test-TST) were completed. Heart rate (HR) and HR recovery (HRR) were measured during all tests. High aerobic fitness presented greater (p ≤ 0.05) performance in LabTest, MSRT and TST, at maximal effort, at VT, as well as faster HRR. RSA was similar between HAF and LAF. Contrary to HAF, LAF showed negative correlation between vLabTest with RSAmean (r = -0.6, p = 0.000) and Sdec (r = -0.4, p = 0.044). Also, LAF showed negative correlation between TST end speed (vTST) and RSAmean (r = -0.5, p = 0.005) and Sdec (r = -0.5, p = 0.003). In LAF, RSA was strongly correlated with locomotor factors (e.g., vTST; VT) in both laboratory and field tests. Athletes with high total HRR (>12.5%) in TST presented better (p ≤ 0.05) Sdec in the RSA test. The multiple regression revealed that the LAF vLabTest explained 44.9, 40.0, and 13.5% of the variance in RSAbest, RSAmean, and Sdec, respectively. Practitioners may consider these findings to optimize youth athletes’ assessment and preparation processes.

How controlled breathing helps elite athletes – and you can benefit from it too

The Conversation, David Shearer from

… Many anxiety interventions focus on ways in which we can control our physiology to ensure that athletes keep a “cool head”. The simplest of all relaxation strategies is slow diaphragmatic breathing, similar to that used in meditation and yoga. We now know that breathing in this way can have a number of benefits.

The most obvious benefit is the immediate effect upon our physiology. If you feel yourself becoming stressed, you will notice how your heart rate increases and your breathing becomes more shallow and sporadic. Concentrating on your breathing and aiming to slow it down will reduce your heart rate and make you feel more calm and in control.

This type of breathing allows us to “hijack” the body’s natural blood pressure regulation system and to increase our heart rate variability (HRV).

What do high velo throwers do that low velo throwers don’t?

Twitter, Jared Gaynor and Paul Glazier from

‘On average’ there might be differences but there can be substantial variation within the respective groups. Attempting to apply group-based data to individuals, particularly elite athletes, is unwise.

  • This analysis quantifies how deep-lying midfield players can help drive a team’s attacking play through sideways or backward passes.
  • Although 46% of Jorginho’s actions for Chelsea were ‘regressive’ last season, 29 sequences involving his regressive actions ended in a goal, ranking him in Europe’s top 20 midfielders.
  • Using clustering methods, young midfielders Pablo Rosario (PSV), Teun Koopmeiners (AZ) and Houssem Aouar (Lyon) all profiled similarly to Jorginho last season based on their passing and distribution.

NWSL pay rules could usher in new era; will US Soccer help?

    Yahoo Sports, Caitlin Murray from

It’s been obvious to anyone paying attention: For the past few years, women’s soccer has been on the rise across the world. Broadcast viewership is up, tickets are selling out, and sponsors are throwing money at the chance to partner with aspirational female athletes.

But as the sport becomes more competitive globally, the burden has been on the National Women’s Soccer League to keep up. The American league would need to transition to a “version 2.0” – and sweeping changes for next season are designed to achieve just that.

“We have a desire to continue to be in the best in the world and that means standards are going to rise,” said Steve Malik, owner of the North Carolina Courage. “Who do you think everyone is gunning for anyway? From a talent standpoint, everybody’s coming at us, and we’re embracing these changes to give clubs more tools to raise their quality.”

Over the last four years, the ECNL has averaged 82 alums each year participating in the Final Four. This year, between the UCLA Bruins, North Carolina Tarheels, Stanford Cardinal and Washington State Cougars, the Women’s College Cup Final Four includes 75 ECNL Alums.

MLB’s era of ‘load management’ is just getting started

Los Angeles Daily News, J.P. Hoornstra from

In 1998, a record 96 pitchers qualified for an earned-run average title. Major League Baseball had just expanded to 30 teams. There were more players, and more pitchers, than ever. In the years that followed, the number of ERA qualifiers – pitchers who threw at least 162 innings in a season – hovered in the eighties and nineties.

Then after the 2014 season, a funny thing happened. Qualifying for an ERA title became somewhat rare. Only 78 pitchers qualified in 2015, then 74, then 58. By 2018, MLB had only 57 qualifiers or fewer than any individual season from 1901 to 1944 (when there were only 16 teams!).

Pitching analytics guru Brian Bannister is leaving the Red Sox — what does it mean for the franchise?

The Boston Globe, Alex Speier from

… Bannister, 38, who spent parts of five seasons pitching in the big leagues, joined the Sox in early 2015 as a pro scout and analyst. But his ability to blend data, analytics, and biomechanics in a language that connected easily with pitchers made clear to the Sox that he was well-suited for a broader role, leading to his promotion to director of pitching analysis and development in Sept. 2015 — around the same time that he helped Rich Hill’s transformation in Triple-A Pawtucket from journeyman to frontline starter.

    ‘Elite Basketball Brain’

The New York Times, Kevin Draper from

… Bucking the trend are the Wizards, who hired Dean Oliver as an assistant coach this season. Oliver wrote the bible of basketball analytics, “Basketball on Paper,” and has served in three front offices.

The biggest change in moving to the bench, Oliver said, is trading in the long-term view for the short-term. “When you are on it, on that bench, in practice every day, you are doing everything you can to make everybody better for the next game,” he said.
